Whether you call them lightning bugs or fireflies their appearance each year marks the true beginning of summer for me.
When I was a little girl my daddy would find us glass jars and punch holes in the tops so we could catch lightning bugs.
My sister and I would run around the yard chasing the flashing lights and when we caught one would add it to our jars.
After capturing a few and marveling at how they lit up the night we would release them before going to bed.
Last night when I closed my blinds for the night I saw my first lightning bugs of the year.
In recent years I have noticed how the number of fireflies has diminished since I was a child.
