GROCERY STORE RANT

Tuesday, May 10, 2022

Why is it that just as soon as you find where everything is in your grocery store some knucklehead decides the whole store needs to be rearranged?

grocery store

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for progress but there is a difference between progress and annoyance.

It has taken me three years to become completely comfortable with knowing where everything is in my local Kroger store.

It's not that I am a slow learner, but Kroger has an extremely odd way of organizing their stores.

Kraut

I literally spent 15 minutes looking for the sauerkraut I wanted yesterday.

Honestly, it took my entire life to not only find sauerkraut that I would eat but one that I liked.

I checked its usual location three times and looked on my app for its location. It wasn't there.

Finally, an employee took pity on me and looked on a map he had to see that it was behind a door with the lunch meats.

grocery carts

Don't even get me started on the fact that all of the carts are out in the parking lot instead of inside the store.

That's a rant for another day.

Okay, maybe it's a rant for today.

Seriously, since you only ever have one cashier while 5,000 people are waiting in line at the self-checkout maybe you could use some of that unused manpower to bring in the carts.

groceries

You keep trying to convince us that self-checkout helps to lower prices.

Ha!!! I wasn't born yesterday.

Also as I don't work for you, why am I not getting a discount for checking out and bagging my own groceries?

I may take a page out of my daughter Cary's book who once told me she would rather stand in line waiting on a cashier than give them the satisfaction of seeing her bag her own.

Now she orders them and her husband picks them up.

tomatoes

I do sometimes pick mine up, but I still like to squeeze the tomatoes.

Yes, I'm that person.

Okay, rant over.

Maybe.

  1. It is kind of crazy how a lot of the grocery stores are set up. It is all in marketing I guess. I am one of those that loves to bag my groceries and use the self check out. Maybe it goes back to childhood and playing store lol! I like to get in and out and not wait in a line. Hope you had a good Mother's Day. xoxo Kris

  2. I agree wholeheartedly! Our Safeway did that awhile ago.. I had just learned where everything was, and the gluten free stuff was all in one place... and then next time I went in, everything was moved around! No more GF area... aisles turned totally around so the thing that was once on THIS end when I walked in, was now way at the OTHER end! gr.r.r.r. not happy. I don't like the lines but I HATE the self check-out, as something always goes wrong, and you have to get a helper person over there anyway. If I'm paying so much, I want someone else to check things out and bag them for me! And they no longer ask if you want help out.. most stores USED to do that, but not anymore. Even when I was on crutches a few times, no one asked if I wanted help! I could rant on and on about various things in the big grocery stores! Marilyn

  3. We still order ours and pick them up. It's worked great and I appreciate the workers that go to the extra effort to choose good fruits and veggies. They usually give us a couple of ripe bananas and then more green ones for instance. That is so nice! I haven't been inside a grocery store in years....doesn't that sound strange? lol I wouldn't know where ANYTHING is any more!

  4. I go to a very small grocery store in our town, it's a little more expensive, but I think everything has been in the same place since I was in high school and while they do have a few self checkouts, mostly it's done by their cashiers. It's old school. When we were in lockdown I had my groceries delivered from a huge chain. I loved it and it actually cost me less, because I bought less and we still ate just fine. I'd still be having them delivered, but my husband likes to shop. I told him have at it!!

  5. I can't really complain about the stores re-arranging things, but I can complain about shortage of cashiers. I found that to be more of a problem when we're in Florida. The Publix I go to there doesn't have any self checkout, which I prefer, if I've just got a few items. So, there's always a wait for the handful of cashiers. On the plus side, they do have baggers almost all the time. Up here in NJ, the problem is that they now don't have enough self-checkout lanes which people seem to prefer, so where that used to be a speedy option, now I often have to wait.
