I love my old books. See those suitcases? They are also filled with old books. I just don't have enough room to display them all.
I remember the Christmas when I was seven, I got two Nancy Drew books as part of the things I got from Santa. I was so excited and I read those two books in two days.
I've now started to collect Nancy Drew books.
Several years ago I decided to buy a box of old books at an auction because there was one Nancy Drew book in it. I think I paid $3.00 for the box. Imagine my excitement when I found this book in the box.
No it isn't a Nancy Drew, but it is a Louisa May Alcott. I love her books and it had quite a surprise inside.
A note that she had handwritten to her readers. I really cherish this, knowing that she held this book in her hands.
Now about those allergies. I conveniently let it slip my mind about one of the main reasons I closed the doors on my desk. I am allergic to the books. It kind of came back to me when I started feeling pretty bad sitting in my living room.
Now I have closed the doors again. Aesthetics are great, but the ability to breathe is a bit more important, and I can take one out, dust it off, and enjoy it when I want.
First, that first photo is just so inviting! I've collected old books for years, especially children's books, but recently have given away hundreds of books due to moving to a smaller living space. And I'm sorry about your allergies. I ordered a book through eBay, but had to discard it due to a musty smell. I like your two horse photos, by the way. The room looks lovely!
ReplyDeleteSorry about not being able to keep the doors of the cabinet open. I had all the Nancy Drew collection as a kid too. Loved them. How exciting and special to have the signed copy and special notation in side of Eight Cousins. Have a great week Laura.

Love your desk. So sorry for your allergies. I take Zyrtec every night and it really helps. Hope you have a sneeze-free week, Laura.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I know what you mean. This air conditioning mess has my asthma going again. Such a wonderful find with the handwriting from the author!

What a wonderful collection of old books. I love them too. I read all the Nancy Drews as a child too, and have saved a few that my mom saved, and now I have them. My mom's cousins worked at the Multnomah County Library in Portland, Oregon and so they collected alot of old signed books which I have a few of. They had a complete collection of Louisa May Alcott books which I now have! I haven't looked to see if any are signed and I need to do that. I treasure those and my Nancy Drews. I only have a few, but they bring back such wonderful memories of my love for reading. I also loved the Bobsey Twins! I never thought of that - having allergy problems from the old books. I do notice when I go into many antique stores, I start feeling yucky sometimes, with the must and dust and probably old books! Sometimes I have to leave the store. Have a good week! Marilyn
ReplyDeleteHi Laura, such a nice surprise to find that note inside Eight Cousins. I was a tad late for Nancy Drew.
ReplyDeleteMy first full series of books I read cover to cover was Little House by Laura Ingalls Wilder. I remember them like it was yesterday.
Better you close the doors then suffer with allergies.
Enjoy
Cindy
Laura, Your books are true treasures. An amazing find in the 3 dollars box of books. Blessings, xoxo, Susie
ReplyDeleteBeautiful. The signed book found a good home.
